Retailers urged to focus on overhead costs as sales figures fall

Friday 19 August 2011

The latest retail sales figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) show zero growth in the volume of total sales year on year last month.

Industry experts and commentators are pointing towards rising household food and fuel bills as the reason for the lack of growth.

The value of sales among retailers with between 10 and 39 employees fell by 15.4% year on year, possibly reflecting a decline in this sector as businesses close. With this in mind, Procuria believe now is the right time for retailers and small business owners alike to be focusing on reducing their overhead costs. Ian Legard, Managing Director of Procuria, commented "The Retail Industry has changed dramatically over the last few years. Given the current reality of increasing trading costs and lower customer spending I would urge all retailers to spend time examining their overheads. Our team do not charge for their advice and will gladly help you look to make significant savings wherever possible"
